The fire service has been the subject of more evidence based research in the past decade than in the prior Century. This has been a byproduct of the enhanced federal sources as well as scientists who have dedicated their talents to conducting evidence based research on virtually every aspect of the fire service. This science has been a driving force in adapting changes to almost every aspect of modern fire services. However, research that has examined firefighter survival has driven the service to re-examine cultural norms and standard operating practices as well as priorities for survival sake. This presentation will examine the state of the science and discuss how to implement into real world practice utilizing case studies from the U.S. and across the globe.
